12/28/97 - 1850 census of Westmoreland County, Fairfield Township, Pen
nsylvania. It lists Patrick with a group of Railroad Laborers. The ent
ry is:
"McAtee, Patrick, 30, Laborer, Ireland". That would put his birth dat
e at about 1820.
The web site is: http://www.westol.com/~pita/fairfield1850.html
Family Tree Maker CD #305: PA Census of 1850 - lists Patrick as a stor
ekeeper. His household lists his first two children, Mary Elizabeth (a
ge 2) and Francis Ignatius (age 1), as well as his mother, Mary (Keena
n) McAtee (age 61). His 1st wife, Elizabeth Catherine (Kintz) died in
Jan of 1850, a couple of months prior to the census, so apparently hi
s mother moved in to his home to help care for the childern

Patrick owned a considerable amount of land in and around Youngstown,
PA. A map of Unity Township, dated 1867, shows land east of Youngstow
n owned by Patrick.

There is a reference in a book titled "A Guidebook to Historic Wester
n Pennsylvania", copyright 1976, 1991, University of Pittsburgh Press
, that lists the following:
"49F: McAtee House (brick) was built about 1825 by the Patrick McAtee
Family. Location: 519 Main Street"
The house in undoubtedly a part of the McAtee family history, but the
was more likely built by Bernard McAtee since Patrick would have been
a small child in 1825. Or, the houe was more likely built later than 1
825.

7/2/00 - Found a web site, http://www.mcn.org/2/noel/StVincentGraveSto
nes.htm#St., listing inscriptions for St. Vincent's cemetery in Latrob
e, PA. Patrick is listed as 1820-1893.
9/4/00 - Date of death corrected to 1/12/1893 from Patrick's last wil
l and testament from "no 25 of 1893" of Westmoreland county wills.
10/29/02 - following information from the Latter Day Saints web site (
1880 census information). Note that Anna McCune is listed as "HSister
" (stands for Half Sister). Why was Anna living with Patrick and his f

The following is an odd letter from the Notre Dame Archives that refer
ence Patrick McAtee:
1881 Nov. 6
Kaeder, O.S.B., Father Maurice: Beauty's (Station), Penn(sylvani)a
to James A(lphonsus) McMaster: New York, New York
Miss Kate O'Reilley has informed Kaeder of McMaster's kindness. Kaede
r has already written McMaster directions for sending him a letter saf
ely, and encloses a card (present) which lists his address as being i
n care of Mr. P. McAtee of Youngstown, P(ennsylvani)a. If McMaster put
s a small mark on the corner of letters he sends McAtee will know tha
t these letters are for Kaeder. The discipline at the Abbey of the Sac
red Heart is reputed to be very severe, including perpetual silence an
d meatless meals, but Kaeder is not perturbed just so that common sens
e, law, and justice are at the head of affairs. These physical self de
nials are not beyond him, but he does dislike a government which canno
t abide by human and Divine laws. He has no desire to remain in a comm
unity which governs itself by the rule that it should be proved that y
ou have not a vocation rather than to prove that you have one, for by
that system you can gather a large body of men but they will be men o
f doubtful worth. If McMaster has the time Kaeden wishes he would comm
unicate with Abbot (Isidore) Robot, (O.S.B.), and then if Robot desire
s him to do so, Kaeden will send him a full statement of the affairs w
hich compel him to seek a transfer.

SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH OF PEACE
This institution, founded in the year 1884 at Nottingham, England, by
the Right Reverend E.G. Bagshawe [then bishop of that diocese, now (19
10) Archbishop of Seleucia], with rules and constitutions under the au
thority of the Holy See, has for its special object the domestic and i
ndustrial training of girls (chiefly of the working class) with the vi
ew to promote peace and happiness in families, in union with and in im
itation of the Holy Family of Nazareth. In addition to this, the siste
rs are employed in educating the young, instructing converts, visitin
g the sick poor, and caring for orphans, the blind, and the sick in ho
spitals. The administrative body is composed of a superior general an
d five councillors elected for six years. There are no lay sisters. Th
e postulancy lasts for six months and the novitiate for two years, aft
er which vows are taken for three years, and then perpetual vows. The
habit is black, with a scapular of the same colour, a black veil and w
hite linen kerchief, domino and forehead band, a leathern cincture, an
d a five decade rosary beads. A silver ring is given at the final prof
ession. Novices wear a white veil during the novitiate. In March, 1895
, the constitutions were submitted to the Sacred Congregation of Propa
ganda by the founder, and in the September following the Decree "Lauda
" was obtained. At present the institute has three houses in England:
the mother-house situated at Nottingham, a house at Grimsby in the sam
e diocese, and one at Hanwell in the Archdiocese of Westminster. The s
isters teach in the parish elementary schools at Nottingham and Hanwel
l, and have a middle-class school attached to each convent. In Grimsby
, besides a middle-class school, there is a girls' orphanage and a ste
am laundry, which is a means of maintenance as well as of training in
that branch of household work. The younger children attend the parish
school.
The first foundation in America was established in 1885 at the reques
t of the Right Reverend Bishop Wigger of the Diocese of Newark, N. J.
, who became deeply interested in the work of the institute, and was c
onvinced of the great good which could be effected by a community devo
ted to the protection and training of poor girls for a life of usefuln
ess in the world. The place selected for this object was in St. Peter'
s Parish, Jersey City, in charge of the Jesuit fathers, where the sist
ers met with a true friend and supporter in the saintly Father McAtee
, S.J. (d. 1904), to whose spiritual direction and kind encouragement
were, by the Providence of God, due the successful labours of the youn
g community. St. Joseph's Home, Jersey City, an orphanage, is the prin
cipal home of the province: with its novitiate at Englewood, N. J. Her
e there was a large building erected for the benefit of girls, where t
hey could spend their summer holidays. It is beautifully situated on t
he Palisades overlooking the Hudson River. The blind were first taken
in charge in a small building in Jersey City, on the site of which th
e present Institute of the Blind stands. The growing needs of this ins
titution obliged the purchase of other property in the neighbourhood,
and now men, women, and children, are cared for in separate buildings
. In the school the children are taught by the improved methods of rai
sed letters and the point system, while the older inmates are employe
d in various branches of industry. For greater facilities and the acco
mmodation for girls a second house was opened in Jersey City, where in
dustrial classes are held on four evenings in the week, and instructio
n given in plain sewing, dressmaking, millinery, and cooking. The "Orp
hans' Messenger and Advocate of the Blind", a quarterly magazine, prin
ted premises on the of St. Joseph's Home, by the orphan boys, under th
e direction of a proficient master, is the chief source of maintenanc
e for these charities, especially for the blind. It has a wide circula
tion in the United States and Canada. From this province houses were f
ounded on the Pacific Coast, the first (St. Joseph's Hospital) being e
stablished in 1890 at Bellingham, Washington (Diocese of Seattle). Lat
er on other foundations were made in British Columbia (Diocese of New
Westminster), namely a hospital at Rossland, another at Greenwood, an
d a day and boarding school at Nelson. Recently a house for girls was
opened at Seattle, Washington. The houses in the West form one provinc
e, which has its own novitiate.

12/29/09 - Her headstone, in St. Vincent cemetery, Latrobe, PA has a v
ery small headstone immediately next to it with no inscription. Since
Elizabeth passed away at such a young age (24 years), I can only assum

Latrobe bid for 'Hall' recalled
By Huddie Kaufman
SCHOLASTIC SPORTS EDITOR
The retirement recently of veteran newsman Vince Quatrini of the Latro

National Football League in New York.
It's been 46 years since Latrobe made the bid. Quatrini is the lone su

, recognized by the Latrobe community as the first paid professional f

At the time, Dr. Brallier played with Indiana College in Indiana, Pa.
The Latrobe YMCA needed a quarterback for a game on Sept. 5, 1895, aga
inst Jeannette. Dr. Brallier, according to historians, signed a contra
ct worth $10 and cakes (board).

rmer Latrobe High School principal, president of the WPIAL and PIAA; a
nd J.L. McAtee of the Latrobe Elks, presented their case to the NFL a
t the Commodore Hotel in New York.
According to Quatrini, the group, with the support of the late Art Roo
ney of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was well-received. "There was so much
enthusiasm for Latrobe that George Preston Marshall, president of the
Washington Redskins, told the committee he would send the Redskins' ba
nd to Latrobe for the dedication," Quatrini said.
"The league voted officially to recognize Latrobe and gave Dr. Braille
r the No. 1 lifetime pass to all NFL games."
There was a lot of enthusiasm in Latrobe, but things went sour when th
e committee was told the community would need $400,000 in matching fun
ds for the project. "The funds never materialized," Quatrini said.
In the meantime, Canton supporters were not sitting on their hands. Wi
th the financial support of Timken Co., headed by William Umstadtt, ch
airman of the board; the Canton Repository and a 400-man strong Canto
n Jaycees, the NFL recognized the city to be the site of the Professio
nal Football Hall of Fame. Ironically, in 1975, Latrobe Steel Co., whi
ch supported the area project, became a subsidiary of the Timken Co.
Plenty of dedication went into the Latrobe project. The Jaycees were a
mong the supporters, along with many other groups, including the firem
en.
There was an exhibition football game played between the Pittsburgh St
eelers and the Green Bay Packers at Latrobe Memorial Stadium to raise
funds for the project.
Canton had too much going for it. According to Joe Horigan, public rel
ations director of the Canton Football Hall of Fame, historically Cant
on had an edge.
Horigan said that Canton had three major items in its favor: 1. The NF
L was founded in Canton in 1920; 2. The Canton Bulldogs were considere
d an early professional football powerhouse which was the first two-ti
me champions (1922-1923, and 3. Jim Thorpe, who played with the Bulldo
gs, was perhaps the best-known professional player in the country.
While Latrobe heralded Dr. Brallier as the first paid professional foo
tball player, in later years, according to Horigan, the dentist was ra
nked ninth among the players who were paid.
According to Horigan, ledgers produced by the Allegheny Athletic Assoc
iation in Pittsburgh, documented evidence that William ``Pudge'' Helff
inger was paid $500 for one game, Nov. 12, 1892. The same ledger, acco
rding to Horigan, noted that Ben Donnely and another player signed con
tracts for the 1893 season.
Larson Fiscus of Youngwood, who was called the "Samson of Princeton,"
had also signed a contract before Dr. Brallier.
Nevertheless, Quatrini said the failure by Latrobe to gain the Hall o
f Fame was his biggest disappointment of his newspaper career. "It wou
ld have been a tremendous boon to Latrobe," Quatrini said.
All that remains of the desire to house the prestigious Hall of Fame i
s a granite stone near the entrance of the Latrobe Memorial Stadium. I
t reads, "Sept. 5, 1895, first pro football game was played here betwe
en Latrobe YMCA and Jeannette."
Lived in Latrobe, Pa. in 1949.

Staff Report
Leroy Thomas McAtee died Friday at a local nursing home. A lifelong
resident of Mobile, he was 80.
"He had such a wonderful attitude toward life," said his sister,
Helen McAtee Adler, 83, his last surviving sibling.
McAtee, a 1940 graduate of the McGill Institute, was inducted into
the McGill-Toolen Sports Hall of Fame in 1972. An avid baseball and
football player, McAtee excelled in boxing, his sister said.
She said he was a two-time Golden Gloves champion, winning the
boxing competition in 1939 and 1942.
McAtee spent 35 years as a firefighter with the Mobile Fire
Department, his sister said.
In 1982, McAtee was diagnosed with cancer.
Several surgeries - including one that took half his tongue - kept
McAtee's cancer at bay for years, but his sister said his health
rapidly declined about four months ago.
After a stint in a local hospital, he was sent to a nursing home
just eight days before his death, she said.
"God was good to him," his sister said. "He was in such pain."
Annie, his wife of 30 years, died 10 years ago. The couple had no
children.
McAtee was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Matthew Catholic
Church today at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends in the
church from 9 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Catholic
Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Allen Memorial Home. Radney Funeral Home in
Mobile is in charge of arrangements.

L ADDRESS P O BOX 7 MOBILE AL 36601
Note that William's death certificate and cemetery headstone list his
birth year as 1884, however, his WW1 and WW2 draft registration cards
both list his birth date as 1880. Since this information was earlier,
and signed by him, this family tree will use 1880 as his birth date. H
is World War 2 draft registration card listed his place of birth as "T
auragrnay, Lithania" which is an alternate spelling for "Tauragnai". R
eseach into the Tauragnai area finds that the Simkunas name is still p
revalent. There is a village across the lake from Tauragnai named Simk
unai. Other references to Simkunas are in the area including the name
of the local elementary school, which was named after Eugenija Simkuna
ite (spelling of the Simkunas name denoting an unmarried female).
Information from his son, William Semk Jr., in several telephone conve
rsations from May 23rd, 2004 to 2009: He traveled throughout eastern E
urope before immigrating to the US. Probably in his late 20's or earl

West Virginia and worked as a coal miner for New River and Poca Consol
idation Coal Company. Also, lived in Summerlee, WV and several of hiw
children were born there. Later, lived on a farm in Arnettsville, Wes
t Virginia, a small town south of Morgantown. Used to take dairy produ
cts to the local coal mine company store with his horse and wagon. Lik
ed to travel to Lithuanian clubs in other towns, including Pittsburgh
, PA. Had younger brothers in Lithuania, but no details of names, ages
, etc. His son William Jr. recalls that one of his brothers in Lithuan
ia may have been blind.
Rented the family farm in Arenttsville, West Virginia until his daught
er Ann and her husband Frank Mays bought it. Buried in Arnettsville Ce

I have not tied Elizabeth Kintz to my family line yet, however my
Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandfather was Frederick Kintz born in Germany in 1788, a
nd
lived in Unity Township, Westmoreland Co., PA. He was married to Mary
and
had 6 children. (Mary, Conrad, George, Rosanna, John, and Catherine)
I do
know that Frederick and many of his family were baptized, married, and
buried in St. Vincent's church in Latrobe PA. I have a photocopy of a
baptismal list that has an Elisabetha Kintz baptised there in 1803.
If anyone happens to have information on Frederick (parents, immigrati
on,
etc.) or his wife Mary, I would appreciate the info!

It mentions the Kerr Family in Westmoreland County, PA
James George, of Scotch ancestry, was born in Ireland in
1760. He came to America in 1778 and made his home in Dauphin
county, Pennsylvania. He married Mary McClure, also of Scotch-
Irish descent, in 1790, and crossed the Alleghanies, where he possesse
d
himself of 240 acres of land in Loyalhannah township,
Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. He died Jan. 18, 1854. The
home place descended to William, the youngest son, and remained
in his possession to the date of his death. He was born May 28,
1816, married Nancy McBride in December, 1844, and died Jan.
21, 1891. On the death of William, the old home was left to his
wife for life with remainder over to the two youngest sons. It
is still in her possession (1916). William was the father of William
Wallace, mentioned above.
Nancy McBride, born July 29, 1827, the wife of William
George, Sr., was the daughter of Hon. Henry McClure McBride
and Elizabeth (Kerr) McBride. Henry McClure McBride was
born Aug. 16, 1800, on the old McBride homestead adjoining that
of the Georges. His marriage took place Sept. 20, 1824. He
served two terms as state senator and filled other local public office
s
and died Jan. 7, 1875. He is buried with his father, grandfather
and great-grandfather in the family cemetery. The home
descended to his son, James, who left it to his daughter, Lulu,
now the wife of William Beatty. The parents of Henry were
James McBride and Martha (Young) McBride. James was born
March 15, 1758, in New Jersey. He was a soldier of the Revolution,
serving in Captain James Moore's company, of Westmoreland
County Rangers. His father was a member of the same company.
He died Dec. 21, 1837, at the age of eighty, after a life of
many hardships. One of his daughters was killed in an Indian
raid during the war. His pension papers for services in the Revolution
are on record at the United States Pension Office, Book C.,
Vol. 5, page 84. He was the son of James McBride, Sr., and Mary,
his wife. James, Sr., was born in 1717 and died in 1812. His
will was probated June 17, 1812, and was dated March 2, 1805,
and is recorded in Will Book I, page 285, Westmoreland county,
Pennsylvania. In 1802, January 8, he deeded the old home to his
son, James, after having possession for several years.
Elizabeth Kerr, the wife of Henry McClure McBride, born
March 4, 1804, died March 28, 1874, was the daughter of David
Kerr and Nancy (Huey) Kerr. David was born Jan. 30, 1783,
and fought in the war of 1812. He died Sept. 27, 1866. His
parents were William Kerr and Margaret (Young) Kerr. He
also was a member of Captain James Moore 's company of rangers.
Martha Young, the wife of James McBride, Jr., born in 1759,
died April 15, 1828, was the daughter of Alexander Young and
Anna, his wife. Alexander died in 1798. The county records
show that letters of administration of his estate were granted
Sept. 26, 1798. He is buried on the old farm. The will of his
father, Alexander, was probated in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania,
in 1751. Alexander, Sr., was the son of James Young, who
was the son of Captain Thomas Young, of London, who settled in
Jamestown, Virginia.
The Youngs, through two lines, are descended from Kings
of Wales. Tudor Trevor, the son of the heiress of William le
Yonge, was the grandfather of Henry Tudor, who slew Richard
III of England at Bosworth field and became Henry VII of England,
fulfilling the prophecy that a Welchman would some day
rule over Great Britain.
Nancy Huey, the wife of David Kerr, was the daughter of
Joseph Huey and Jane (Love) Huey. Joseph died in 1806.
Mary McClure, the wife of James George, was born in Dauphin
county, Pennsylvania, Oct. 19, 1770, and died in 1841.
According to the "History of Westmoreland County," the
Georges, McBrides and Kerrs were among the earliest settlers
in the county.
